Out of the Bluegrass got its start when friends Jeff Belding, Mac Petrequin and Bert Wilson started the acoustic trio, Scioto Furnace. After a few years, Peter Conklin joined the band and Out of the Bluegrass was off and running. Tim Roden joined on guitar in 2017. They have performed their brand of lively acoustic music in the Capital District, Catskill and Adirondack regions for more than 10 years. Out of the Bluegrass was the 2015 winner of the Jenny Brook Bluegrass Festival band contest.
Mac Petrequin began playing banjo in 1976 being influenced by Earl Scruggs and Bill Keith. He went on to learn rhythm guitar, upright bass and Dobro. In addition to performing, Mac is an avid songwriter, makes cookie tin banjos and travel dobros and teaches banjo privately and for the Adirondack Folk School in Lake Luzerne.
Bert Wilson started playing a musical instrument as an adult and studied electric bass with Jeff Belding. He continued his music studies at Schenectady County Community College completing their music certificate program. He enjoys listening to diverse music styles like jazz, rock, bluegrass and old school country.
Peter Conklin started his musical career playing guitar and electric bass for many bands in the Hudson Valley. He also studied guitar and collaborated with Jeff Belding going back many years. More than 11 years ago, he attended the Grey Fox Festival and decided to play the mandolin. Shortly thereafter, he joined Bert, Mac and Jeff and Out of the Bluegrass was born. Since then, he has become a skilled mandolin player with a fearless soloing style and his singing is a foundation for other band members.
Tim Roden has studied music and guitar over the last 10 years. He is a 2015 graduate of Schenectady County Community College with a degree in music performance. He has played in bands performing diverse styles including classic rock, jazz and bluegrass.
