Bob Fisher first saw the dark skies of the Adirondacks as a child on summer camping trips near Speculator. At age 15, he built his own telescope in his Paterson, NJ basement, and began to experiment with astrophotography. After a conservatory education and a career as a classical clarinetist, he went returned to school to teach science in the New York City school system, where he worked primarily with at-risk high school students. An avid hiker, he purchased a log cabin in the foothills of the Adirondacks in 1991, which he shares with his wife, the writer Bibi Wein. Since taking early retirement in 2006, he’s out photographing the night sky at every opportunity. He specializes in landscape astrophotography, in which earthly features frame images of the heavens.
An invitation from the Johnsburg Library led to regular exhibits of his astrophotography and botanical portraits. In 2021, he mounted his second two-person show at the Chestertown Library’s Ruplin Gallery with his friend and one-time darkroom partner, photographer Jerry Wein. And at the Ruplin in April 2024, he mounted the widely praised solo exhibit, Thirty Years of Astrophotography. His discussion of this work was featured on North Country Public Radio on April 8, the morning of the eclipse.
Bob’s awards include recognition from LARAC and North Country Arts. His work has been selected for juried shows from Old Forge to Gloversville. The national magazines that have featured his images have been featured include Adirondack Life and Wildflower, The Magazine of the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. They can be seen online in The Light/Space/Time Gallery, Spaceweather.com, and Adirondack Explorer.
A popular public lecturer, Bob has hosted astronomy programs throughout the Adirondacks and at SUNY Adirondack in Glens Falls. A long series of presentations at the Adirondack Interpretive Center in Newcomb, supported in part by the Adirondack Park Institute, included daytime astronomy for young children, and a program in the Huntington Lecture Series.
Bob’s work appears frequently at Ticonderoga Arts, LARAC and the North Country Arts Gallery at the Shirt Factory. His newest work can be seen in the H’ART Studio and Gallery in North Creek and at Birds of a Feather in Chestertown.
