The year is 1850 in Nobles Corners, an area that will be eventually known as the Town of Johnsburg. Descendants from Scotland, Ireland, England, and other European countries have settled here to farm the land with the grit and determination necessary to survive in the Adirondack climate.
Nobles General Store is the center of commerce where news and gossip are shared. Differing views on slavery in Nobles Corners begin to divide the community as southern states secede and the country heads for violence. As war begins, men and boys enlist to fight, leaving the women and a few men behind to work and worry about their loved ones fighting to keep the country together.
Based on the historical novel Leaves Torn Asunder, by Glenn Pearsall, the story covers the years just before and during the Civil War, where boys became men before their time, lives were lost, and the war eventually won. Several characters from the story are buried in local cemeteries and their descendants still live in these parts.
Gem Radio Theatre is proud to present Leaves Torn Asunder, A Radio Play, on History Weekend.
